
Jordan has expanded its electronic waste recycling infrastructure by licensing eight specialised recycling factories and 34 collection centres as part of a national strategy to improve resource recovery, strengthen environmental protection and advance the country’s circular economy agenda, according to the Ministry of Environment.
The initiative, announced in Amman on 13 July 2026, forms part of Jordan’s efforts to address the rapid growth of electronic waste, one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams. Government officials said the expansion is intended to improve the collection, treatment and recycling of discarded electrical and electronic equipment while reducing environmental and public health risks associated with hazardous materials.
Mahmoud Al-Zaboun, Acting Director of the Hazardous Waste Directorate at the Ministry of Environment, said the country has also established nine designated e-waste collection sites across Amman, Irbid, Zarqa and Aqaba. The infrastructure includes a 3,000-square-metre recycling bank in Amman’s Tla’ Al-Ali district.
An electric vehicle battery recycling project at the German Jordanian University has also commenced operations with an annual processing capacity of 6,000 tonnes.
Jordan prohibited the import of used electrical and electronic equipment, used electric and hybrid vehicle batteries, and mercury-containing lighting products from the beginning of 2026.
Authorities are also developing a lifecycle tracking system for electric and hybrid vehicle batteries through collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, the German Jordanian University, Jordan Customs, the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization, and the Public Security Directorate.
Officials said three licensed companies have been authorised to collect and export used electric and hybrid vehicle batteries. A proposed accredited laboratory would support battery testing and regulatory oversight.
The measures are intended to strengthen Jordan’s waste-management capabilities, improve compliance and recover valuable materials from electronic waste as volumes continue to increase.
